The easiest thing in the world is to coast along… or is it?
The problem with coasting is that the unexpected always happens eventually.
So, when Lewis Hamilton is 5 laps from winning the world title, he should be expecting rain (amongst other things); when Arsenal are 4-2 up against Tottenham with less than a minute to go, they should expect a spirited fightback.
And, when a recession hits the UK, we should be prepared and we should have the flexibility to deal with it.
I went to an awards dinner last week and the funniest, and rawest, thing that was said on the night was by a local businesswoman, Liz Jackson. Basically, the message was that we have had it good for a long time now and the downturn will make things interesting, it will test us. We just need to pull our fingers out of our backsides.
Ultimately, you can create the most efficient of businesses but when an external event happens, what then? I am ready to be tested and I am exploring new ways of running my business and that may include things I’ve never done before. Once again I am reminded of one of my favourite sayings, pinched from the Dalai Lama…. Change is the only constant.
